Remote Job Application Checklist for Nigerians: CVs, Portfolios and Preparation

Before uploading your CV, ask yourself: can a recruiter quickly find evidence that you can do this particular job?

A document listing every course you have taken may still leave that question unanswered. Prepare a small, relevant evidence pack for each shortlisted role.

Make the CV support a specific application

For customer success, describe a real situation where you clarified a problem, supported a customer or explained a service. State your contribution and outcome without inventing performance figures.

For technical support, select an incident you can discuss: the symptoms, diagnostic steps, tools used and resolution. Software applicants can add a relevant code contribution; management applicants should show how they improved team performance or handled escalations.

These are preparation suggestions, not additional employer requirements. Label personal projects clearly instead of presenting them as paid employment.

Choose samples that match the work

Moniepoint’s form requests a CV, LinkedIn profile and portfolio of work created from scratch. Its hiring process includes a take-home assessment and an assessment presentation. Prepare to explain your thinking, not just display polished headlines.

For technical documentation, select a clear guide that demonstrates accuracy and usability. For community work, organise evidence of contributions, public discussions, talks or projects; Canonical’s Community Engineer form asks for links showing your public engagement.

An Igbo writing sample may help you assess your readiness, but do not describe an unsolicited sample as a mandatory upload unless the application requests it.

Read the form’s instructions before drafting answers

Several Canonical forms explicitly require applicants to use their own words and warn that AI-generated content or plagiarism can disqualify an application. Write those responses yourself.

The forms also ask about academic performance and grading systems. Explain your actual results clearly; do not casually convert Nigerian grades into another country’s system.

RWS specifically requires a smartphone, personal computer, reliable internet and antivirus software. Backup power and an alternative data connection are sensible personal preparations, not additional requirements stated in that listing.

Your final readiness checklist

  • Your CV prioritises relevant evidence.
  • Sample links open without requesting access.
  • Dates, qualifications and location are accurate.
  • You understand contract work versus salaried employment.
  • You can meet relevant scheduling or travel expectations.
  • You have followed originality instructions.
  • You have checked filenames and contact details.

Save a copy of each submission and note which version you sent. That makes interview preparation easier.
