Berea College Scholarship Documents: A Practical Checklist for Nigerian Applicants
A strong result cannot rescue an incomplete application. Your most useful preparation is to identify which documents you control and which depend on a teacher, school administrator or another person.
Start with the latter. They usually need more notice than uploading your own files.
Assemble the required materials
Berea’s international checklist requires:
- The online application.
- Copies of official secondary-school records.
- A personal essay.
- One teacher recommendation.
- A financial resource recommendation.
- Official test scores.
- The International Financial Questionnaire.
A CV and research proposal are not listed as standard required items. Avoid spending days preparing documents that the application has not requested.
Academic copies should be certified by school officials, with English translations where necessary. Include relevant leaving-examination results and any required university transcripts.
As practical preparation, scan every page clearly and use recognisable filenames. Check the portal’s current file-type and size limits; do not assume a generic PDF rule applies.
Write your essay independently
Berea specifies a two-to-five-page essay addressing your educational and life experiences, future plans, thoughts about returning home, and positive community impact.
It also instructs applicants to receive no assistance with writing or editing. Write and revise it yourself; do not submit an AI-written essay or pay someone to rewrite it.
You can prepare by privately recalling concrete experiences before writing. Think about what you actually did, why it mattered and what you learned. The application needs your own account, not an invented hardship story.
The question about returning home is not, by itself, evidence of a contractual return-home obligation.
Arrange both recommendations
Your teacher recommendation and financial resource recommendation serve different purposes. The financial recommender must understand your circumstances and cannot be a close relative.
Use Berea’s forms and submission instructions. Give each recommender enough time and confirm completion rather than assuming a conversation means the document has been submitted.
Berea requires its own International Financial Questionnaire; another organisation’s financial-aid form is not a substitute.
Your application-readiness check
Before moving to the portal, confirm that:
- Your academic scans are complete and readable.
- Your test report meets the published requirement.
- Both recommenders understand their tasks.
- Your independently written essay answers every prompt.
- Your financial information is accurate and consistent.
A passport is also sensible advance preparation: Berea lists its biodata page among post-admission I-20 requirements.
Open the official Berea application links in Part 4 and use the final checks to turn your prepared documents into a complete submission.
